Riverhead (WALK) -The search for a missing boater ended yesterday morning when his body was found in the Long Island Sound.
The remains of Ciro Stellges of Selden turned up near Duck Point Pond in Peconic, one day after he called 911 and reported his 26-foot sailboat was taking on water. Stellges, 59, was wearing a life vest, but he'd apparently spent many hours in water than was under 50 degrees.
Police say Stellges was headed to Port Washington from the bay waters of Mattituck when his vessel, called MAC, ran into trouble. Suffolk County Aviation and Marine police combined forces with the U.S. Coast Guard and Riverhead Police divers to find him and his 1977 C&C fiberglass sailboat.
The search took place all day Sunday, and a Coast Guard helicopter continued the search at first light on Monday, shortly before the body was found.
