Islip Officials: Clemente Park Cleanup at Least 6 Months

Islip - (WALK) It could take six months or longer to remove the estimated 50,000 tons of contaminated construction debris from Roberto Clemente Park in Brentwood, according to Town of Islip officials.

Prosecutors found evidence of the cancer-causing mineral asbestos at the park in April, in concentrations as high as 44 percent.  Officials extended their cleanup time line after Suffolk District Attorney Thomas Spota introduced evidence of toxins including pesticides and heavy metals were also present amid the debris.

Enviroscience Consultants Inc., of Ronkonkoma is conducting soil analysis and is revising its remediation plan, according to published accounts.  The company is expected to complete its plan within 30 days, according to town officials.   Agencies including the Suffolk County Water Authority, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation and the Suffolk County Department of Health must review and approve the plan.

In a report to residents Tuesday, town officials said there is no evidence of asbestos in air samples at Clemente Park.  Concerned residents are encouraged to call the Suffolk County Department of Health for information about asbestos-related or other public health questions: 631-787-2200, or visit http://http://ww.suffolkcountyny.gov/
