Riverhead - (WALK) Prosecutors in Suffolk want to be sure a convicted child sex predator won't have prayer of ever enjoying freedom when he is sentenced Monday for attacking the second of two children.
Juan Pablo Zelaya, 30, of Bay Shore was convicted last year for the predatory sexual assault of a 10-year-old girl in 2012. He was then sentenced to 25-years-to-life in prison. In March of this year Zelaya (photo) was convicted in a separate case of predatory sexual assault for the rape of an 11-year-old girl in July of 2012.
Suffolk District Attorney Thomas Spota says he will press for an additional sentence of 25-years-to-life in prison for Zelaya when he returns to Suffolk County Court in Riverhead Monday morning.
"The maliciousness of these sex crimes makes him deserve the maximum punishment under the law," said Spota. "But also deserving of consideration at his sentencing on Monday should be the startling fact that this predator lured his victims into a bedroom by telling each girl, that he wanted to pray with them." said Spota. "In effect, a 50-years-to-life sentence is, without question, appropriate, considering the human suffering for which he's responsible," he said.
Zelaya turned 30 years old in April. If he is ever released from the New York State Correctional system, he would be deported to his native nation of El Salvador, said Spota.
