DA: Church Treasurer Helped Himself to $35,000

Mineola - (WALK) A former church treasurer will serve a penance of 15 days behind bars for stealing more than $35,000 dollars from the East Meadow Church of Christ in Bethpage.

Derrick Campbell, 44, of West Babylon, was sentenced to jail Thursday. He was also ordered to repay the money he stole and to serve 5-years probation, according to Nassau prosecutors.

"Campbell, who acted as the church's volunteer treasurer, forged and deposited numerous checks drawn on the church's checking account to pay for personal expenses like gas... groceries, and at least one mortgage payment," according to a statement from the Nassau County district attorney's office.

A defense attorney says Campbell stepped out of line when his business as a self-employed financial consultant was failing.

Campbell has reportedly already paid back $28,450 of the $35,542 he stole from the church.  Campbell told the church about his trespass; trustees referred the case to prosecutors in August of 2012. He was arrested two months later, charged with grand larceny and convicted in August of 2013.
