Hauppauge (WALK) - Officials with the Suffolk SPCA are asking for tips and offering a reward as they try to find the person responsible for abandoning a dog behind a Walmart store in Suffolk.
Someone contacted the SPCA after finding the female pit bull tied to a shopping cart behind the Walmart in Commack on June 2nd. The dog is about 1-1/2 to 2-1/2 years old, was underweight and has a skin disease, investigators say.
The dog is also lactating, indicating that she recently had a litter. SPCA officials say they are concerned about the welfare of her puppies, which may be too young to survive without their mother.
Suffolk SPCA chief Roy Gross says that a videotape from a nearby store security camera has led them to identify a person of interest. His photo is below.
A $2,000 reward has been offered for tips that lead to an arrest in this case. Anyone with information on the incident, or who recognizes the man pictured above, is asked to call (631) 382-7722.
The dog, meanwhile, will soon be put up for adoption. Gross says she displays a friendly, sweet disposition.
