$1,000 Reward for Information About Abandoned Baby Alligator

Yaphank - (WALK) Animal protection agents are offering a reward of $1,000 for information leading to the arrest of whoever dumped a baby alligator at Mill Pond in Yaphank.

The 15-inch 'gator bit a canoeist who tried to pick it up Friday, according to Suffolk SPCA Chief Roy Gross.

"There were 20 alligators last year that were recovered, plus other reptiles," said Gross.  "It is a crime to abandon reptiles and animals," he said.

Possessing an alligator is a violation of New York State law, subject to a $150 fine. A cold-blooded miscreant who abandons an alligator in a public place could be sentenced to a year in prison.

Anyone with information about the abandoned "nipper" is asked to call the Suffolk County SPCA: 631-382-7722. All calls are confidential.
